A disaster supplies container that will contain emergency materials for residents in the Sunnyside section of Staten Island was off-loaded and set down at the Petrides School at 715 Ocean Terrace. The school is a designated area evacuation shelter for use during an emergency.
The container, the first for the Chapter, was delivered and secured at the location by Con Edison and the New York Container Terminal. Arrangements were made by New York Container Terminal Senior Vice President of Operations John Atkins, who is the new advisory board chair of ARC/GNY - Staten Island. The location was secured by the Staten Island Department of Education. As funding becomes available, additional disaster supplies containers will be placed on Staten Island and throughout the Chapter. ARC/GNY's Miguel Ovalles, who is from the logistics and field communications group, coordinated the entire project.
The trailer and supplies were donated by the Richmond County Savings Foundation and Staten Island Foundation. Former New York City Council Member and now newly elected State Senator Andrew J. Lanza provided funding for the container and supplies for the community. The Chapter will load the container with blankets, cots, bottled water, heater meals and comfort kits.
