Senator Sabini, Greater New York Chapter, and Community Leaders Announce Fundraising Efforts for South Asia Flood Victims

The devastating floods in South Asia have prompted a vigorous humanitarian partnership effort in Queens.

American Red Cross in Greater New York Queens Director Joan Foley (middle), joined State Senator John Sabini (3rd from left), and community leaders (L to R) Giash Mazumdar and Syed Rahman of the Jackson Heights Bangladeshi Business Association, Sujit Dhakal of the Alliance for Democracy and Human Rights in Nepal and Shiv Dass and Amarjit Singh of the Jackson Heights Merchants Association, at the Post Office in Jackson Heights, Queens on Wednesday, August 8 to announce fundraising efforts for victims of the tragic monsoon flooding in South Asia that has left more than 360 dead and up to 30 million displaced in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.

"The Red Cross is there to help around the corner, around the nation, around the globe," said Ms. Foley.  "The International Red Cross Movement and the National American Red Cross have donated millions of dollars and tons of supplies to the relief effort in South Asia."

Travis Betz, the Director of Logistics and Field Communications of the Greater New York Chapter, just returned from a month-long deployment in Pakistan as part of a Field Assessment and Coordination Team on the ground in the days following the floods and Cyclone Yemyin.  "The need is still dire and the pain and suffering is tragically still felt by millions throughout South Asia" said Foley. "Please help us help them."
