Over the last two days, the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) has aided hundreds of Brooklyn residents affected by a violent Wednesday morning storm at a Red Cross shelter set up at P.S. 314, the Luis Muñoz Marin Elementary School at 330 59th Street in Brooklyn.
Wednesday night, the Chapter provided food, comfort and shelter for more than 85 people.
Thursday night, the Chapter provided 50 households (101 adults and 24 children) with emergency housing at three area hotels. Many people will remain in hotels provided by the Red Cross over the weekend. Red Cross caseworkers will continue to assist these residents during the next several days.
Since Wednesday, ARC/GNY has served more than 1,000 meals and more than 2,500 snacks to clients at the shelter, as well as to first responders working to restore services.
Chapter relief workers returned to the community today at the same location, P.S. 314, which will operate as a Red Cross Service Center through 7 p.m., offering aid to residents still in need of assistance. The Red Cross continues to work in partnership with the Brooklyn Chinese American Association and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association to provide interpreters and assistance to the families.
