Senator John Sabini, Greater New York Chapter and Peruvian Leaders Call on New Yorkers to Help Peru Earthquake Victims
August 21, 2007

State Senator John D. Sabini, the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) and Peruvian community leaders called on New Yorkers to give what they can to help the victims of the massive 7.9 earthquake that struck the central coast of Peru on August 15, leaving more than 500 Peruvians dead and thousands injured.

"The earthquake has caused major devastation across the region," said Christophe Lobry-Boulanger, ARC/GNY International Services Program Manager. "In Pisco alone, thousands of families have lost their homes and are living outside on the streets.  The Red Cross stepped in to help immediately, but more money is desperately needed to fund the relief operation."

The International Red Cross and many of its country-based chapters in South America sent supplies and volunteers to the earthquake region immediately after the tragedy occurred. The Red Cross is collecting funds to support its operations, which it estimates will cost at least $1.4 million.

Latest reports estimate:

  • Nearly 500 fatalities
  • Approximately 1,050 people injured
  • More than 33,600 houses destroyed
  • Severe infrastructure damage to roads, highways, hospitals, public buildings, churches, communications networks, and water and power systems
  • Pisco and Ica remain the most severely affected towns. In Pisco, an estimated 80 percent of the infrastructure was damaged or destroyed, while 25 percent of the homes and buildings were destroyed in Ica.
  • One-third of people affected by the earthquake are reportedly children and adolescents.

Powerful aftershocks continue to be felt in the affected region. Limited telecommunication networks and lack of water supplies and electricity in the affected areas are significant challenges to response efforts.

"So many Peruvians here have family and friends who have been affected by the recent tragedy," said Admiral Rodolfo Flores, director of the Jackson Heights-based American Family Community Services. "By sending money to the earthquake victims, we are helping not only them but Peruvians here in New York and all over the world. I thank Senator Sabini and the Red Cross for everything they're doing to help the situation."
