Citizen Corps Outreach Day Carries the Preparedness Message to Thousands of New Yorkers in All Boroughs

New York City Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joe Bruno, third from left, and American Red Cross in Greater New York CEO Theresa A. Bischoff, third from right, where on hand early Thursday morning at Foley Square in Lower Manhattan to kickoff the New York Citizen Corps Outreach Day, one of the highlights of Preparedness Month.

Also at the Foley Square kickoff were, from left, Philip Livingston, MD, of the Medical Reserve Corps, Herman Schaffer, Chair of the NYC Citizen Corps Council, Anne Rinchiuso of the NYC Department of Health, Jeanine Pekkarinen, ARC/GNY Director of Community Outreach, and Will Sanchez, a member of the East 60's Neighborhood Association Community Emergency Response Team.

More than 200 volunteers from a dozen non-profit agencies will distribute more than 100,000 pieces of literature designed to help New Yorkers and their families better cope with unexpected emergencies - from house fires to hurricanes. Distribution is taking place at key transportation hubs in all five boroughs:

Bronx: South Bronx Hub (148th & Willis)
Brooklyn: Borough Hall (Columbus Park)
Manhattan: Foley Square (Worth & Centre Streets)
Mitchell Square Park (168th Street & Broadway)
Queens: Jamaica Station (Parsons  & Archer Avenues)
Forest Hills – 71st Avenue Station
Staten Island: Staten Island Ferry Terminal


Thousands of New Yorkers will receive valuable preparedness information from Citizen Corps volunteers throughout the day.
