Volunteer Spotlight: Gary Chin

Since Gary Chin joined the Greater New York Chapter in 2004, he has worn many hats—as a responder, a Disaster Action Team member, volunteer partner to Christie Whitten, Assistant Director, Disaster Staffing, and a Volunteer Quality Assurance Board member.

Garry was drawn to the Red Cross for no more specific reason than, as he put it, "I was very happy with my life and I wanted to give back.” Garry is no stranger to volunteering. He has worked as a math and English as a Second Language tutor most of his adult life. Although he finds tutoring rewarding, he wanted to help out in a more direct way.

The Red Cross has proven to be a great fit for Gary, and vice versa. Rae Talerico, Senior Coordinator, Brooklyn Response, describes him as “A very dependable guy with a great attitude. He has great follow-through, is thoughtful, funny and brings a lot to the team.”

Gary says he has enjoyed working with everyone he's met so far. “People that work at the Red Cross want to help, and I really connect with that.”
