More than 100 volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross in Greater New York were on hand today to provide support for the thousands who attended September 11 Memorial Ceremonies at "Ground Zero” in Lower Manhattan.
The Red Cross started bringing materials to the site late Sunday night and Red Cross volunteers reported for duty at 5 am. They set up 10 hydration stations and a first aid station around the 16 acre World Trade Center site. These stations provided bottled water, snacks and tissues to the thousands of family members of those who perished four years ago, in addition to hundreds of uniformed service personnel on-hand to honor their comrades and other visitors from 7 am to 5 pm.
Dozens of volunteer Red Cross counselors strolled through the crowd many of whom stood for hours in the bright 77 degree sunshine, providing tissues, water and comfort as needed.
